As you ride on cloud nine of excitement, you might feel ready to dive right into planning the wedding ASAP *… or maybe not*. For some, wedding planning comes naturally and immediately. Here are wedding planning details that you can put on hold for at least a month or two after your engagement. 

## Finding The Perfect Dress Or Suit

As excited as everyone is, though, you certainly have time in this regard. If you have a year or more, you can start looking for upcoming trunk shows or bridal sample sales happening near you. You may want to book appointments at any salons that you hope to visit in the future if they tend to book up quickly. Otherwise, though, you shouldn’t feel rushed.

The same goes for the right suit for a groom. Wait until you pick an overall wedding color scheme or figure out how formal you want to go before you choose anything.

## Choosing Your Wedding Party 
If you accidentally already blurted out that you want certain friends to be in your wedding party, that’s OK. Rounding out the fully party, though, may take some time—and that’s also OK. You may also need time to decide if you even want a wedding party and other variables. Your wedding party, particularly your maid of honor and best man, plays a big role in your wedding planning so you want to make sure you find people who are not only your closest family and friends but who also fit the role. So, feel free to sit on this for a bit. 

## Working Out The Guest List 
Creating a wedding guest list isn’t exactly easy—there are a lot of factors that go into deciding who to invite and [who to skip](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-talk-to-friends-werent-invited-to-wedding). Before you finalize a guest list, you should finalize your wedding budget. Your budget will determine how much you can spend on a venue and catering, both of which impact guest count. It’s not worth it to debate about distant cousins or old college friends before you figure out a general guest count range. If you want some extra padding, ask that your parents don’t announce your engagement to people outside the family, such as coworkers or the rest of their extended network yet.

Thinking about who to invite and not to invite can make your head spin. It’s totally OK to wait to finalize the guest list until after you work out your budget. Plus, until you know exactly how many guests the venue can hold, you might want to hold off on deciding which of your far-distant cousins makes the cut. If this is sure to cause conflicts, it’s fine to tell your parents to maybe wait to mention the engagement and upcoming wedding to all of their co-workers and extended network. 

## Planning the Seating Chart 
This probably goes without saying, but your [seating chart](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-create-a-wedding-seating-chart) isn’t one of the first things you need to worry about post-engagement. After all, you don’t even have a guest list yet. You probably will think about obvious table pairings (or people you want to keep away from one another) before you actually start the chart. Instead of trying to map it out too early, just keep notes of couplings that you think of throughout your planning process. Then, review and apply your notes when you finally do make a seating chart in the months before your wedding. 

## Hiring Vendors 
OK, this one is a bit more involved. While you really don’t need to hire vendors in the first month after you get engaged, there is an exception. If you have your eye on a certain popular florist, baker, caterer, venue, etc., you may have to move quickly. Demand will make a difference if you’re hoping to get married in a year or less. 

If you aren’t concerned with a specific timeline and really don’t have any specific vendors in mind, though, you can relax. Most vendors can be booked further down the line (not too much, though). It’s possible that one vendor may lead to another, especially in the case of venues and caterers. If you hire a wedding planner, he or she may also have recommendations for you. Let a few other details fall together before you panic about vendors.

## Figuring Out Legal Stuff
Nothing kills the romance of an engagement period like thinking about the tax implications of your marriage. If both partners are from the same country, typically, the only legal matter you’ll be dealing with while wedding planning is applying for your marriage license. And that’s usually done right ahead of the ceremony. 

It’s possible that your specific case may require other legal work ahead of the marriage, but you’ll likely be aware of these and may have even discussed ahead of the engagement.

## Building Your Wedding Website

Your wedding website will serve as a hub for all of your wedding day or weekend information. So, ideally, you’ll wait for a few key components before sharing your URL. And those things are typically influenced by your venue location.

Many couples also choose to include their engagement photos on their wedding websites so you’ll want to get those back first, too. Plus, you need time to build your wedding registry so you can link out to that, as well. Your wedding website should be ready to go by the time you send out save the dates or invitations. ## Finalizing Your Wedding Style 
Your wedding style can be a vague notion that sort of guides your wedding planning or your wedding style can be a strict set of guidelines that inform your entire wedding strategy. Whichever it will be, though, the month after you get engaged is not the time to finalize it with your partner.

## Pros Of A Coed Wedding Shower
### Both partners are invited.
Traditional bridal showers exclude a very important person—your soon-to-be spouse. With a couple’s shower, you and your partner get to celebrate and be celebrated. At the event, your closest family and friends will surround you for some pre-wedding fun. And if you don’t like being the center of attention, your partner will be next to you for those (occasionally awkward) shower games.

You’ll both also share the gifts (and thank you note responsibilities!) Plus, you’ll both get to know more of the extended family and friends if you haven’t met them already.

### It can be more casual than the traditional bridal shower.
While coed showers may have longer guest lists (which can also be a drawback—see below) they tend to feel more relaxed. Instead of a sit-down brunch, why not throw an afternoon BBQ in one of your family member’s backyards, complete with brats and brews? Or, if that isn’t your style, look for a restaurant or other space that can hold your nearest and dearest for the event.

## Cons Of A Coed Wedding Shower
### They can be more expensive.
One challenge to a coed shower is that, because you're inviting both you and your partner's nearest and dearest, the guest list is going to be longer. More guests, of course, means additional costs for food, drinks, potentially a larger venue, etc. If the host(s) are on a tight budget, and you have your heart set on an elaborate shower, the couple’s route may not be for you—or, if you do want to go the couple's shower route, you may need to adjust your expectations (for example, by hosting the event in your backyard instead of renting a venue).

### You may not have time to open all the gifts.
With an extended guest list, you’ll likely receive more gifts at a coed shower. You may not have time to open each gift one by one. 

That being said, you don't have to open all your gifts at your shower. Instead, you might consider putting up a sign on the gift table letting guests know how much you appreciate the gifts and that you’re so excited to open them—later, at home.

## Who do we invite?

Some potential venues include the host’s backyard, a poolside party, a local restaurant the couple loves, a bar with a private party room, or a country club. You may want to look into community centers or local parks, too, if you’re on a budget.

### Serve food/drinks everyone will enjoy.
Bridal showers have been traditionally associated with dainty fare like tea sandwiches—we’re talking super traditional showers. With a coed shower, anything goes, though. Depending on the time of the day, you may want to have a brunch buffet with eggs, bacon, and mimosas, a more casual backyard "I do BBQ" with burgers, or an all-you-can-eat taco bar (complete with plenty of margaritas!). Or, if you wanted to do something more elegant, you could even have an evening cocktail party or intimate dinner party.

### Make the favors gender-neutral.
You’ll need to make the party favors universally appealing as well. Some ideas for a coed wedding shower include a sweet treat from the couple’s favorite bakery, a local delicacy that represents the couple’s hometown, personalized bottle openers, or monogrammed glasses/cups with a fun anecdote.

In the same spirit, you'll also want to let your guests know that, if they're bringing shower gifts, those gifts should be appropriate for a co-ed wedding shower. ### Choose the right games for your co-ed wedding shower. 
 The right bridal shower games won't necessarily work for a co-ed wedding shower; if you want your wedding shower games to be a hit, you need to pick party games that are going to work for all the co-ed in attendance.

Here’s the thing about [engagement photos](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-get-most-out-of-your-engagement-photos): We really love them. In fact, we encourage them. (For one, they’re a great way for couples to get comfortable with their wedding photographers and [wedding photography](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/first-look-wedding-photo-ideas).) Here’s the other thing about engagement photos: A lot of them look, well, the same. 

There are probably a few reasons for this:
- Couples are pulling from the same sources of inspiration: social media, friends and family, etc.
- Couples aren’t used to being photographed, so they default to staged poses that they’ve seen others do before.
- Everyone’s always wearing plaid. Just kidding—kind of. More on this later…

On the reverse of this trend, we also see couples who attempt to set themselves apart. They see their engagement photos as their chance to stand out, have fun, and maybe garner some social media attention. Totally fair. However, sometimes, in an attempt to stand out, couples actually fall back into the same somewhat cliche engagement photo patterns we see time and time again.

OK, so why does this matter? Between your [paper suite](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/choosing-engagement-photos-for-your-paper-suite), your wedding website, and, yes, your social media posts, your engagement photos play a large part in any visual elements leading up to your wedding. So, you want to come out of the [engagement photo shoot](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-get-most-out-of-your-engagement-photos) with photos that feel like you, not every other couple. The staged look may be fine for some, but not for you.

### 1. Meet with your photographer beforehand.
The first step to having photos that don’t look staged (or like copy-pastes of another session) happens long before you step in front of the camera. When you’re on the hunt for a wedding photographer, look for couples that look relaxed and real in their portfolios. 

Once you decide on a photographer, reach out and ask to meet with them in person. You want to do this before the shoot for several reasons. For you, meeting up is an opportunity to run your ideas and preferences by them, as well as ask questions. Be open about your desired look and, if you’d like, bring example photos (just not from other engagement shoots). You may, however, bring examples of poses and photos you don’t want. Sometimes saying no to certain aesthetics is actually a more effective way to get the look you want.

Meeting in person also gives your photographer the chance to get to know you as a couple. Witnessing your personalities and the way you interact makes capturing that energy easier. A professional photographer will work hard to mesh their style with your desired vibe.

### 2. Use a location that really represents both of you.
Skylines, beaches, woody areas, large open fields of tall grass. What do all of these locations have in common? They're regularly the backdrop for engagement sessions. Disclaimer: That’s totally fine if any of these areas are significant to you as a couple. Met in NYC on a whim? Take your photos in front of the city. However, for most other cases, we really recommend trying a more unique location—and one that really represents both of you. This could be the bar or restaurant where you first met, your favorite date spot, where you do a shared hobby, or in your home if you live together. If you’re really attached to the in the field idea, maybe head to your college’s football field (if you went to the same school) instead of opting for a random patch of land. 

It doesn’t have to be a place of paramount importance—just somewhere that really speaks to the two of you and your relationship. Having a meaningful setting makes it easier to act natural, making for truly candid and organic shots. 

### 3. Avoid matching outfits.
Listen, we tread lightly but also firmly here: Exact matching outfits for your engagement photos is a cute idea. However, if you want photos that don’t look like everyone else’s, skip the coordinated plaid ensembles.

Instead, consider your location and the tone of your shoot when you choose outfits. Stick to a [cohesive color idea](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/what-to-wear-for-your-engagement-photos) (neutrals, muted colors, etc.) and you’ll look like more like a couple and less like a set of adult twins.

In the same vein, don’t wear something you wouldn’t normally wear or that’s out of place in your setting. For example, don’t wear a bohemian dress and wade into the ocean just for aesthetic’s sake. You’ll confuse your family and friends.

### 4. Branch out with poses.
For many couples, their engagement shoot is the first time they’re ever having professional photos taken. In that case, it’s easy to default poses you’ve seen done before. Don’t do that.

The best engagement photos are those that feel genuine and candid. Read: Avoid the prom pose, silly perspective tricks, and anything that feels cheesy or unnatural. In fact, it’ll probably look best if you don’t pose at all. Trust us.

Most people aren’t used to being followed around by a camera—we get it. Try, however, to forget that your photographer is there. Interact with your partner how you normally would—walking hand-in-hand, leaning into one another, playing around, etc. Look at each other and be in the moment. ### 1. First Date Spot

## 3. Don't let others on social media cloud your judgment

Allen agrees with this sentiment, saying, “Despite what many think, sometimes avoidance is the answer.” Particularly, when it comes to the less significant details, like guest books and table decor. Doing so can do wonders at keeping you stress-free, while also preventing someone from getting their feelings hurt.

“No one is going to call you out on your wedding day,” Allen says. “So it’s OK to just let it go or passively let them down.”

## 5. Focus on your relationship
Amidst all of the chaos that is wedding planning and fielding comments, it’s crucial to take time for yourselves to focus on your relationship. Often, the process can be long, the comments from those on your guest list can get tiresome, and it’s easy to become detached. Make sure to remind yourselves of why you’re getting married in the first place. In the end, the ceremony and celebration are meant to celebrate the two of you can no one else.

Pro tip: If you’re feeling overwhelmed with information and others’ opinions, take a step back. If possible, put your wedding planning aside for a day or two. Instead, enjoy a date night or some quality hang-out time together. Then, once you’re feeling refreshed, get back into it.

## Why Your Friends May Be Acting Differently
It’s easy to dismiss friends’ distance as jealousy, but Moir-Smith says when people pull away or act weird after a friend’s engagement, there’s often stuff going on beneath the surface, including social, financial, or other factors.

### Social Reasons
A joyous occasion for you may make loved ones realize what’s missing in their lives.

“Anybody who is in a difficult marriage or just broke up with someone and sees no prospects…  it may look like jealousy, but it's really feeling sad for themselves,” she says. “On the one hand, they are happy for you, but it makes them reflect.”

For single friends, an engagement can signal a fundamental change in your relationship with them. They may worry you won’t have as much time for them anymore or fear your bond will change. They may also be concerned that your lives are going down different paths now that one of you is getting married and one of you isn’t. 

“When you get engaged you are growing the intimacy with your future husband—he becomes your best friend and that is good and appropriate,” Moir-Smith explains. 

“But with close girlfriends, there’s an enormous shift in the relationship and a loss of intimacy. So often people are reacting to that feeling of being less important in your life.”

### Personal Reasons
Friends can also treat you differently because there’s something going on in their personal lives. This can include a sick family member, their parents’ divorce, or work-related stress. If you haven’t been in touch as often amid wedding excitement, you may be less tapped into such circumstances. 

### Financial Reasons
Money is also a factor for some friends, which can cause them to withdraw during wedding planning. Because it can be hard to admit you can’t afford things like [bachelorette parties](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/cant-afford-the-bachelorette-trip) and bridesmaids dresses, it’s often easier to bow out or make excuses. Last, your friend may not like the person you’re marrying, which is a hard thing to admit. Maybe you’re aware of their lukewarm feelings towards your partner, or maybe they’ve tolerated them up until now. Either way, if a friend isn’t thrilled with your spouse, they may be pulling away from your wedding. 

## Be self-aware...
While it’s easy to blame strange behavior on just your friends, you also need to look in the mirror. Moir-Smith says many brides can get swept up in wedding planning and turn their focus solely to their big day, and not realize they’re isolating others. No one enjoys being around a “wedding monster,” Moir-Smith says, so make sure you aren’t acting like everything revolves around you. 

### ...including on social media.
You also want to look at your [online presence](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/unplugged-wedding), Moir-Smith says. It’s perfectly normal to share wedding updates on social media, but you don’t want to go overboard. Did you go from posting travel photos and pictures with friends to only sharing wedding-related content? If so, you might want to consider how this affects others. 

“If you are doing that, you have to own that and realize people are going to react to that behavior because you have changed,” Moir-Smith says. “Is it really important that everyone sees all the bridesmaids dresses you're thinking about?”

If you’re hurt or confused by a friend’s sudden coldness, Moir-Smith says it’s important to address it with them in a kind and compassionate way. Empathy, she says, is key. 

“This [conversation] is something you do quietly, privately, and between the two of you,” Moir-Smith says. “Meet them with a kind heart, not an angry heart.”

Moir-Smith suggests starting the conversation by sharing how you feel first. That way, you are inviting a conversation—not pointing the finger or accusing someone of “not being happy for you” or “being a bad friend.”

*“Say things such as, ‘This is really weird for our friendship. I don't know if you're feeling it, but I sure am. I'm happy that I'm marrying [insert partner’s name], but at the same time, I really miss that closeness that we shared.’”*

You can also let your friend know what while yes, things are different right now, you still really value their friendship. By coming from a place of love, you are letting them know you want them to be in your future long after your wedding day.

__“What’s important is that you don’t put it all on your friend,”__ stresses Moir-Smith. “That can ruin the friendship. But if you want the friendship to continue, address it with kindness and an acknowledgment that there is a real change happening.”
