__We asked over 4k Zola couples getting married in 2023 about what’s on their minds – what they’re planning, what they’re prioritizing, and what’s got them pumped.__

And what we heard back was pretty interesting. These couples have been engaged for on average 2 years – longer than any group we’ve surveyed before. That means more time to plan the wedding they really want, and to celebrate even more of the mini-moments along their way to the big day. 

Good news: There’s no shortage of ideas. Couples are getting inspo — things they love and things they might do differently — from all the weddings they attended in the epic year for weddings that was 2022. Plus, with the rise of [#WeddingTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@zola) and Zola’s [online wedding planning community](https://www.zola.com/community/topic/general), they now have more places to gather, get ideas, and ask questions. For 2023 couples, it’s not about “keeping up with the Joneses,” it’s about creating unique, personalized, intentional, and memorable celebrations.  

More good news: These couples are excited. We straight up asked them how they feel about wedding planning and they made it clear that this is a journey they feel enthusiastic about. They’ve shaken off preconceptions of what a wedding should be: __2023 couples know that, ultimately, the wedding is just one (really fun & special) part of the journey. And, there are many days and moments that they’re celebrating along the way. __

## First comes love, and then, for most couples, comes a long list of milestones before marriage (including a longer-than-ever engagement).<a id="couples"> </a>

The ongoing wedding boom means many venues and vendors booked up well in advance, so __2023 couples have been patiently waiting their turn for (on average, 18 - 24 months)__. For some added perspective, before the pandemic, the average engagement was about 12 months long. But hey, what’s a few extra months when over half (54%) of these couples have been together for 5+ years?

And, couples haven’t just been waiting around to get their lives started; they've used this time practically, and they don’t feel like marriage absolutely must precede other life events. Aside from choosing each other, these couples have already ticked off some pretty major milestones together. Sure, they live together before the wedding. But, from combining finances and making huge purchases, to going to couples therapy, some even breaking up and getting back together, they’re riding the rollercoaster of life in a way that is just right for them.

## For these couples, weddings aren’t just for the sake of tradition; weddings are a way for couples to be surrounded by their loved ones, represent who they are as a unit and demonstrate their love for each other.

__2023 couples want their weddings to feel even less “traditional” (43%) than weddings of the previous few years.__ It’s not about the pomp and circumstance: They want to be married and have a wedding, yes, and they want those weddings to be representative of who they are and what their future together will be about. This year again, we see couples turning away from what they’re supposed to do and turning towards what they’re excited to do. 

Our data also shows subtle nuances in how this plays out for different generations. 

- Millennials and Zillennials ranked having a fun party with their loved ones as the #1 reason to have a wedding
- Gen Z ranked because it means a lot to them and is something they’ve always dreamed about as their top reason

The majority of couples, regardless of age, also want to demonstrate their love for each other in the form of a wedding. Meanwhile, very few couples of any age are having a wedding just because they feel like society, tradition, or other people say they should. 

## Couples are looking to the future — when it comes to choosing a partner, background matters much less than shared values and vision.

__Here’s what couples said was very important for their partner to share:__

- Values 
- Vision for growing a family 
- Financial goals 
- Sexual compatibility 

Sharing the same career goals, level of income and salary, political views and religion are important, but for almost all couples, these attributes rank much further below what’s listed above. 

Additionally, race is no longer an important factor in choosing a partner: 85% stated that marrying a person of the same race is not important to them at all. This makes sense when you consider that rates of interracial marriage [continue to increase](https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2020/05/27/as-millennials-near-40-theyre-approaching-family-life-differently-than-previous-generations/#:~:text=Among%20married%20Millennials%2C%208%25%20of,all%20racial%20and%20ethnic%20groups.) from generation to generation. It simply doesn’t take precedence the way it did for many previous generations, and especially does not take precedence over those factors listed above. 

Couples' diverse backgrounds show up in their authentic wedding visions:
- 14% are combining their religions and cultural traditions 
- 31% are having a religion-free wedding 
- 22% are purposefully choosing a wedding vendor team who aligns with their values.

## Although certain about who to marry, most couples reported also feeling unsure of where to begin: 60% feel overwhelmed by setting a budget and 54% don't know where to begin their vendor search.

When it comes to when they’re wedding planning, these couples are using their free time — and some of their not-exactly-free time. While most couples are planning on the weekends and at night, 46% did admit to planning during work. We see you, we salute you. 

Despite 33% saying they feel like they’re planning “all the time,” they’re enjoying it together. __Half of 2023 couples said wedding planning has made their relationship stronger (45% said it didn’t have any impact on their relationship).__ They’ve also got big support systems around them. 77% said their partner has been their “rock” during the process, 18% said their pet is their tower of strength, and 5% have found an anchor in their therapist. Huh, not a bad ad for wedding planning.

## Inflation has increased some costs, but it has not changed overall budgets or wedding guest counts, so we know couples are spending $ with extra intention and thought. <a id="budgets"> </a>

__The average wedding budget sits between $20,000 - $40,000 (the same as 2022), and guest lists fall between 100-150 (31%), and 150-200 (23%).__ Important to note: Most of these couples locked their venues and vendors in months ago, so many costs and contracts have been signed, sealed, delivered for quite some time. 

OK, so  what are these couples prioritizing their spend on? 2023 couples are mainly willing to splurge on their memories: They want the perfect photographer and their ideal venue. 

In terms of what they’re prioritizing less, compared to 2022, fewer  couples marked attire as a “splurge” (down 20%). Makes sense when you consider the increased interest in upcycling: 19% want to thrift their wedding look and/or elements. And, as couples remain conscious of their budgets (and their guests!) amid rising costs, they’re also thinking in a cost-conscious way around hosting supplementary events such as bach parties and showers, to make them meaningful but without huge price tags. 

__The majority of couples continue to contribute to the payment of their wedding in some way.__ They’re also being smart about how to pay:

- 29% are optimizing credit cards
- 26% have saved for years prior to getting engaged
- 24% are adding cash funds meant to supplement wedding costs to their registries 

Speaking of cash funds, 81% have added cash funds to their registry, and they’re using them as an opportunity to ask for support on the many other financial responsibilities beyond their wedding:

## 2023 couples have spent the past year cheering on their loved ones at, on average, 5+ weddings, and 80% say they’ve been heavily influenced to make their celebrations even more unique. 

Like we said, these couples don’t see their wedding as an obligation — they are planning the weddings they want to attend. For the most part, __2023 couples want their weddings to feel more fun, authentic, and welcoming, and a reflection of their values, and less traditional, religious, and fancy.__ 

And that translates into some pretty interesting ways couples are reimagining their weddings. From having a friend or family member officiate, to breaking with gender stereotypes, picking a theme that feels authentically them, and even memorializing loved ones who’ve had an impact on their lives, they’re differentiating in many ways:

## Social media has taken on new roles during the planning process, helping 71% of couples figure out their wedding style, making 48% feel even more excited, and providing 24% with a greater sense of community. <a id="social"> </a>

While there used to be a few big resources for wedding inspo, (shoutout to Pinterest, the mood board OG that 75% of couples said is still a major source of inspo) there are now endless channels for couples to surf. 

#WeddingTok is rising fast to compete as a top resource, while 13% of couples are turning to online communities, such as [Zola’s community](https://www.zola.com/community/topic/general), to feel connected, supported, and get inspired. 

Beyond inspo, 49% credit TikTok as being there for them as a much-needed mental break and/or comic relief, and 23% said endlessly scrolling social media helped them to combat stress. Fortunately, only 13% said social media added pressure to do things a certain way or to a certain standard. 

__For 90%, social media plays a role on and around the big day__, with 29% admitting they'll overshare their planning and wedding pics for years to come (we would, too!), and 13% incorporating an actual social media plan into their wedding day timeline.

## After 2 years of planning, what will these weddings look & feel like? The answer: unexpected, local, non-traditional, and also yummy. <a id="inspo"> </a>

__Love is in the air -__ 81% of 2023 venue inquiries on Zola’s platform are for completely outdoor, or covered outdoor venues. So, while beautiful, staple ballrooms venues are the most popular, we see that parks & garden venues come in as a close second as couples seek boho, natural vibes to fit the settings. Think wildflower bouquets, more casual-feeling events, and even celestial themes. Searches for farms, barns, and ranch venues on Zola have also increased 39% in the past year. 

__All the drama -__ The word “moody” is a top search term on Zola for 2023 weddings. How are couples incorporating this? In terms of color palettes, think dark, gorgeous shades like plum, emerald, gold, burgundy, maroon and rust that evoke true romance. Beyond the look and feel of that day, we also see this vibe creep into other vendor choices, such as couples are gravitating towards more dramatic and cinematic photography & videography. 

__Local romance -__ Also, remember we said that couples are having weddings to feel connected to their loved ones, so as ⅓ of couples are concerned about current travel industry troubles, 55% are choosing a venue local to where they currently live, and 18% are choosing a venue local to their hometown. 6% are selecting an international locale. 

__Full hearts, full bellies -__ Hot & fresh wedding food coming right up, with caterers supporting couples in their quest for creativity. In fact, 15% of couples are incorporating their own dietary preferences into the food selection. Expect: 
- Foods that nod to couples’ hometowns and heritages – from crab cakes for Maryland to green chilis for New Mexico, and everything in between
- After-party fast food – Taco Bell, Panda Express, Chipotle…pick your poison
- Pizza. That’s it. That’s the trend. (And we’re here for it) – casual, customizable, easy to serve en masse: what more could you want?

## After the wedding there’s… a breather to enjoy married life. Now, that’s what we call wedded bliss.

As we said, while the wedding itself is one momentous, huge, milestone, it’s not the only one 2023 couples are planning for. Once they’re married they have some big plans:

- 27% are prioritizing buying a home
- 19% are prioritizing starting a family
- 15% are prioritizing paying off debts
- 7% are prioritizing saving for travel
- 5% are prioritizing finishing education

And, when asked what they’re looking forward to most after the wedding, most couples answered sweetly that they just can’t wait to spend the rest of their lives together. Here’s to happily ever after.

A majority of Zola’s First Look Report respondents said they celebrated their wedding milestones with a tipple.

Getting engaged deserves proper recognition—after all, it’s people’s favorite wedding-planning moment, according to Zola’s First Look Report 2023. Be sure to savor it together. A night out with your partner was another top choice for Zola survey respondents celebrating their wedding milestones. You can also spend a lovely night in: If you’re already in saving-for-the-wedding mode, cook your favorite meal, light the candles, and pop some bubbly. A low-key evening with your future spouse is the perfect way to celebrate.

### 3. Some Rest and Relaxation

__Perfect for: When you create your budget__

You’ve been working hard at thinking through, calculating, and estimating every aspect of your big day—and creating a budget is usually couples’ least favorite aspect of wedding planning, involving more than a little bit of stress. But you did it. Reward yourself with a bit of rest and relaxation, another top choice of First Look Report respondents for celebrating wedding milestones.

### 4. Delicious Treat

__Perfect for: Your food tasting and cake/dessert tasting, or when you say “yes” to wedding attire__

Treat your tastings as special events, and allow yourself to be pampered during that part of the process. Finalizing your wedding attire is a big moment, too. In fact, for some, this is the milestone they’re looking forward to more than anything else. And rightly so, because this is the one outfit you’ll remember for the rest of your life (and maybe even keep in your closet forever). Yes, it can also be a stressful experience, but how often do you get to try on so many beautiful garments? And the moment when you find the one and start to really see yourself as a bride or groom is simply the best. Enjoy the process of deciding, and celebrate with something tasty. 

### 5. Time Off From Wedding Planning

__Perfect for: When you get your marriage license__

Your marriage license isn’t the most exciting task on your road to married life, but it is a requirement for your union to be deemed legal. So you’ve checked a big box on the wedding checklist. 2023 couples have been engaged for on average 2 years – longer than any generation before. Through the years, they’ve been overloaded with inspiration from the constant stream of their social media feeds, not to mention the 10-plus weddings couples say they’ve attended, on average, over the past two years alone.

With so much noise, it’d be easy for these couples to feel overwhelmed and stressed, and to some degree they are. But these couples are also enjoying the wedding planning process. Here’s a look at what Gen Z, Millennials, and Zillennials ranked as their favorite parts of wedding planning, according to [Zola’s 2023 First Look Report](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/the-first-look-report-2023). 

## Couples' Favorite Wedding Planning Moments Ranked

### 1. Getting Engaged <a id="engaged"> </a>
Whether it was an over-the-top romantic gesture or an intimate moment, 39.57% of couples say getting engaged has been their favorite part of wedding planning. It makes sense, too—it’s the kickoff to the main event.

### 2. Feeling Done With All of the Planning <a id="lives"> </a>
Whether they hired a planner or did all the planning themselves, 29.43% of couples were happy when the planning stage was over—they considered the milestone a huge stress reliever. What’s more, it was an exciting time, since all that remained ahead was the fun of walking down the aisle, tying the knot, and celebrating with your loved ones.

### 3. Saying “Yes” to Wedding Attire
Saying “yes” to the dress—and the entire wedding party attire, for that matter—is a sigh of relief for most couples. It’s stressful looking for the perfect attire to complement the wedding theme and venue, not to mention there are pictures to think about. 31.23% of Zillennials were relieved once they found the perfect wedding attire. Gen Z was right behind them with 30.96% of couples agreeing. 

### 4. The Engagement Photoshoot
Engagement photos are a rite of passage before sailing into the rest of the pre-wedding festivities. While the session isn’t a must do, the resulting photos are something to cherish forever, so for 31.67% of Gen Z couples, it ranks high on their list of the best parts of wedding planning; only 22.14% of Millennial couples agreed.

### 5. Sharing the News With Family & Friends
It’s exciting to share your engagement news with your loved ones, whether it’s in person, via text, or even social media. Couples even get creative with how they announce the news.

### 6. Food Tasting
For about 15.82% of  couples, food tasting is one of the most fun and memorable parts of the whole wedding planning process. A wedding tasting is when couples taste the menu items with the caterer for the reception, and it’s usually done weeks or even months ahead of time to allow for adjustments for the finalized menu.

### 7. Choosing the Venue
Destination wedding, beach wedding, farm wedding, or even a ballroom wedding, no matter the location, choosing a venue is a fun part of wedding planning. The venue is the backdrop for the entire wedding day, from the budget to the wedding attire.

### 8. Picking Out Wedding Decor (Flowers, Balloons, Etc.)
Weddings are all about highlighting who you are as a couple and your personal style. 16.37% of Gen Z couples thought this was the best part of wedding planning, while 11.21% of Millennials, and 14.44% of Zillennials agreed that picking out and/or designing the wedding decor is something they enjoyed.

### 9. Practicing the First Dance
The first dance is your premiere as a married couple, so practicing ahead of time will help you shine. Some opt for dance lessons, others choose to practice at home, but no matter how you plan to two step, the first dance allows you to kick off the reception and open the dance floor to your guests. For 12.02% of all couples, this is one of the best parts of wedding planning.

### 10. Getting the Marriage License
Things start to feel really real once you have the official marriage license in hand. It’s a must-have before the wedding. Depending upon the state you live in, couples only have a couple of months to get married after obtaining the license.

### 11. Creating a Playlist
Every couple’s wedding soundtrack is different, and that’s where the fun comes in. From up-tempo songs to romantic ballads, you get to be the DJ. 13.91% of Zillennials were ready to get the party started by creating the playlist, while 7.83% of Gen Z couples said this task was the best part of wedding planning. 

### 12. Cake/Dessert Tasting
Cake and dessert tasting is a little more involved than just spending a couple hours eating cake and combining frosting and cake to create the perfect accent to your wedding day. You’ll need to be able to provide logistics, budget, and even the appearance of the cake. Will there be a dessert table? What kinds of desserts will you put there? Some couples love this part of the process, but in the survey, only a total of 7.95% of couples enjoyed this part of the planning. 

### 13. Designing Save-the-Dates or Invites
Designing the stationary is another way to show off your style as a couple. Save-the-dates are less formal than wedding invitations and don’t have to match each other or the wedding theme. They go out early enough that you can change your design when it comes to the wedding invitations. 7.79% of couples surveyed said this was one of the best parts of wedding planning. 

### 14. Putting Invites in the Mail
Once the envelopes are stuffed, addressed, and posted, your wedding invites are ready to be sent out. Putting them in the mail will give you and your future spouse peace of mind once your invites start their journey to guests' mailboxes.

Availability of your venue can determine if you get your dream wedding date, but when you finally nail down the date, the wedding planning ball starts rolling faster. 5.32% of couples say picking the wedding date is the best part of the wedding planning process. Some couples pick dates that are symbolic, others pick a date that a venue has available. 

### 19. Practicing the First Kiss
You don’t want an awkward moment after you’ve said your vows in front of everyone. Just like you would practice your first dance, practice the first kiss to avoid any fumbling or bumping heads when the moment comes. 

### 20. Posting About the News on Social Media
It’s exciting to share your engagement news with thousands of your social media friends, but only 3.36% of couples thought that sharing the news on social media was one of the best parts of wedding planning. 

### 21. Getting the First Wedding Gift
Receiving the first wedding gift is an exciting prelude to the wedding day, but only 2.74% of couples found this to be the part of the wedding planning process. 

### 22. A Special Cultural Moment

How much can you comfortably afford to spend? Money can be a tension trigger, so it’s important to have that honest and open conversation about everything from the wedding size, number of invited guests, catering, and more. This was the least favorite thing for couples—only .99% found it as the best part of the wedding planning process. 

Couples love the start of the journey—“getting engaged” is the overwhelmingly favored wedding moment for couples of all ages. Next on the list? Being done with all of the planning. But that doesn’t mean there’s not moments of fun to be had along the way. Couples are learning that planning a wedding is about more than just the wedding day. From picking out a venue to choosing attire, there are many days along the way that couples can enjoy.

Meeting that special someone can happen in a myriad of places, but meeting the one that will be your forever bae and partner for the rest of your life is a moment to treasure. <a id="meet"> </a>   

In [Zola’s First Look Report](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/the-first-look-report-2023), we surveyed 4,000 engaged couples to find out who they are, what their priorities are for their 2023 weddings, and what makes these weddings different than ever before. We found that 2023 couples met at a variety of places and life stages. If you’re single, you may wonder where to find someone. Here’s a look into where our 2023 couples’ love stories started. 

## __Top Places Where Couples Met__<a id="top"> </a>

While your match made in heaven isn’t going to literally fall out of the sky, you can find him or her in one of the following places, like these couples did. 

### 1. At school

Twenty-eight percent of couples say that they met in an educational setting. Think about it, you spend most of your time on campus in your late teens and early 20s, and that’s the time when most people find their other half. Some even end up marrying their high school sweethearts. 

If you’re attending a workshop or some other event at a school, for maybe your child or a niece or nephew, then you could bump into that school principal or teacher that takes your breath away. One survey participant said, “I was visiting my parent’s island where they were born and raised. [My now fiance] was a teacher at one of the schools I was visiting, and I fell in love with him and just wanted to get to know him even more. He says [that] the same goes for him, he had to get to know me and from then on we just knew we would be together.”

### 2. Online dating

Technology is the new wave by dating via an app. Twenty-seven percent of couples say that they met through an online dating service or app. “I matched with a guy on Hinge; he set up a date with me and then canceled at the last minute, but told me that his roommate was recently single, so he set up the date to be with him. It was double-blind for me since I didn't know that Hinge guy at all. Turns out, we went to school two hours away, have many mutual friends, but never crossed paths,” says one engaged individual. There are so many apps to try, and you may get frustrated, but don’t give up. Keep swiping up, down, right, and left, until you find someone that catches your eye. 

### 3. Through friends

The friend network still works! Nineteen percent of surveyed people met their partner through a friend, so it may be time to let your friends know that you are ready to mingle. Have your friend introduce you to their single friends. 

### 4. At work 

It may feel weird to date and work in the same place, but for some it works. Eleven percent say that they met their significant other at work. One couple in the survey says that they met while he was a cashier at Target and she was his customer. Another engaged couple shared, “We met as members of a philharmonic chorus and won our first Grammy in 2021” (talk about an award winning connection)! A word of caution, make sure that you know the rules of the workplace, as you may have to inform your human resources department if you start dating your co-worker or even your boss. 

## Other Popular Places Where Couples Met
Sometimes love can appear when you least expect it and when you aren’t even looking for it. Here are some more popular places that engaged couples met. 

### 5. A bar 

You may be thinking that meeting someone at a bar is so cliche, and that it can only mean that you’re looking for a one night stand. Not always! Your other half could just be out with friends and you lock eyes as you are with your friends, and the rest is history! Besides, if you have a drink, that will ease your nerves, so you can get the convo started. 

### 6. Facebook 

You never know what could happen when you accept or send that friend request. Many people have reconnected with an old flame or met a new one via Facebook, whether it’s by sliding into the inbox or exchanging comments on a thread. Facebook also has the dating feature, so the option of dating online is still there. 

### 7. Through family 

Family members love to help their loved ones find love. It might not be so bad, as they just may know what you need. “His grandfather and I worked together at the YMCA. He tried to get us to exchange numbers, without meeting, for a month before we agreed to. We met for our first date two days later,” says one survey participant. Another one added, “We were family friends our entire lives and ultimately (and strategically) [were] seated together at a wedding.” You may not want your family messing with your love life, but sometimes they strike gold.

### 8. Church 

If you are active at church (or another place of worship) and spend a lot of time there, then this may be the spot that you find your other half. From the singles ministries to teaching Sunday school, you never know if you just might pass the communion wafers to your new boo. 

### 9. At the gym 

Getting fit may not be a bad idea when there’s the potential that you can run into your future spouse. You may find yourself on the same treadmill every day beside the same person and then strike up a conversation and realize that you actually have some things in common. Working on a common goal to get healthy or stay healthy may be the bond you form with someone that works or works out at the gym. While it wasn’t at a gym, one couple met performing an athletic activity together. “He fought my ex-boyfriend at a paintball park when we were teenagers, and won.”

### 10. At a restaurant 

Before you question us, hear us out. If you like to go out to eat by yourself, you may notice (or be noticed by) another person dining out solo and decide to join each other for an appetizer. Or, if you are eating at the bar, maybe you hit it off with the bartender or someone sitting nearby. It’s also possible that the waiter or waitress is the one that you’ve been waiting to meet for your whole life. Coffee shops are also an option to potentially meet your significant other.

### 11. Craigslist 

One couple met by responding to an ad. “He responded to my friend's ad looking for a subletter.” That one piece of furniture that you’re wanting to buy or sell on Craigslist could lead you to the one that grabs a piece of your heart.

### 12. Chuck E. Cheese 

A teenage love can start anywhere, and it did for this couple. “I was 14 and he was 15, both in attendance at a family member’s birthday.” But, as an adult, you may be attending your godchild’s birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese and meet your future partner on the other side of the building attending a family member’s party. It can happen! 

### 13. At a Renaissance Fair 

What better way to meet someone than at a place where your interests intersect? Imagine a 16th century European style art and entertainment festival that blends history and fantasy through outdoor theater with throwback costumes? You may just find your Romeo or Juliet. 

### 14. UberPool 

With UberPool, riders heading in the same direction choose to share a ride. So, if you’re heading downtown and the Uber driver picks up another rider, you may just hit it off. Who knows, it could be fate.

Regardless of where these couples met, they are feeling more excited than ever. Forty percent say that they are more excited and in love than ever.

You’ve been on date after date, but then you finally click with someone. How do you know if they are the one you might want to spend your life with? 

In [Zola’s 2023 First Look Report](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/the-first-look-report-2023), we surveyed 4,249 engaged couples to discover how they knew they had found “the one,” how they’re planning all the days along their wedding journey, their values and priorities, and what’s inspiring them ahead of their 2023 wedding. Here’s a look at some of the most important and the least important things these couples considered when choosing their spouse.

## What's Most Important in Finding a Partner

Everyone is looking for different things in a partner they can call “the one.” And sometimes you just know you’ve found what you’re looking for. “I saw how he continuously reassured me, accepted my baggage, and never put me down or made me feel like my feelings were invalid,” is how one survey participant knew they had found their perfect partner. Another one said they knew they picked the right partner by how he treats them. “The way he looks at me, even after nine years, makes me feel more seen and understood than ever before.” 

__Here are some of the top characteristics couples were looking for in a lifelong partner:__ 

### Values<a id="values"> </a>

__Over 28% of couples say having the same values are very important when finding the right person to marry__. Your values don’t have to be identical, but they should align. People that have the same values and priorities can help create a stronger foundation in the relationship and the future outlook is more clear. “I was pretty in love with Amy from the time we both shared our desire to help people overcome addiction. This happened to be the same night that we first kissed, too. I just think very highly of her as a person, and I'm excited to achieve our goals together,” said one survey participant. “It was a combination of seeing his heart, his character, and the way that he was completely devoted to me. He brings me peace,” said another participant about how they knew their partner was “the one.” 	

### Family Planning Vision<a id="vision"> </a>

Couples agree to tie the knot, but what about adding kids to the mix? It’s important to talk about if you want kids or not. If one person wants a family and the other person doesn’t, it can cause a lot of tension. 

__Out of the couples surveyed, 86.56% said it was very important in finding a partner that shared the same vision for growing a family.__ “I have two children, 15 and 3, from previous relationships and before we even made it official, he treated them both as his own,” says one survey participant. Another one agreed that seeing how their partner treated their child is what let them know they were “the one.” “I knew my partner was the one once I saw how he interacted with my child from a previous relationship and loves me with everything I have.” 

### Financial Goals

Nobody likes to talk about budgets, but when you are combining households, it’s an important topic. It’s also important to talk about everything from hopes, fears, debt, and credit history. If someone’s credit score is really low, is that something you can handle as you work towards building a life together? __At least 69% of couples surveyed said this is a very important must-have when choosing a partner, while 28.64% said it’s somewhat important to have the same financial goals.__ It goes beyond a wedding budget, you have to factor in big purchases like homes and cars, vacations, and overall lifestyle. If you aren’t on the same page, that could lead to disaster in the long run. 

### Sexual Compatibility<a id="comp"> </a>

Sexual compatibility refers to two partners having shared or similar sexual needs, including sexual preferences, turn-ons, and desired frequency. If you and your partner are sexually compatible, then you will share the same turn-ons and turn-offs and like to engage in the same things. You will also have a similar desire to engage in new experiences or stick to the familiar tried-and-true ones. You’ll also be on the same page with frequency expectations and duration. __It’s not a deal-breaker, but 71.56% of couples say it’s an important factor when choosing a future spouse.__ You can work on it by communicating your needs and expectations and discussing ways to fix any incompatibilities before they become a bigger issue.

### What's Not So Important in Finding a Partner<a id="notimp"> </a>

While there are many things that are must-haves on your list for a future spouse, there are some things that may not be as important when finding “the one.” Here are some qualities that the couples we surveyed deemed not as important when finding their life partner. 

### Race

Everyone has a preference on the type of person they want to date and their background, but for the most part, __84.56% of couples said race wasn’t important when finding the right partner.__ Only 4.44% thought it was an important factor. Ultimately, it should be about chemistry and not skin color, however it stands to reason that some cultures may have traditions that have to be followed.

### Salary

Being in a relationship with someone who makes more or less money than you can put a strain on a relationship, but it doesn’t have to. You can avoid ego issues by being honest about what you are looking for in the relationship, your financial needs, and goals before things get serious. __Only 51.36% thought salary was somewhat important, while 37.05% did not find it to be an important factor when choosing their life partner.__ Discuss how much money you will need to reach your future goals or if getting more education to work towards a promotion is what’s needed. 

### Religion

Religion can be a sticky subject, especially if you practice a particular faith. Some religions require a partner to convert before marriage. __36.75% of couples surveyed said it wasn’t an important factor when deciding on “the one.”__ They may have discussed religious traditions, how they practiced, and their depth of faith before committing. 

### Education Level

__Education level was not an important factor when choosing a future spouse, according to 31.59% of couples that participated in the survey.__ It’s more about the person’s intellect and communicating what’s important to each partner and how it relates to future goals in the relationship and their career. 

#### Why Have a Wedding?
When survey participants were asked about why they’re having a wedding, __the majority said “it means a lot to us, we want to demonstrate love, and we want a fun party.” __

The couples we surveyed don’t think of weddings as a chore or an obligation, but as a chance to demonstrate their love for one another in front of those who matter most. They’re focused on creating weddings that are a reflection of the things that are meaningful to them, and throwing a really epic and memorable party for all their family and friends.

For [Zola’s First Look Report](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/the-first-look-report-2023), we asked over 4,000 engaged individuals for their insights into all things wedding planning, including how much they’re planning to spend. Let’s take a look at what they had to say—and what weddings will really cost in 2023:

## What Will the Average Wedding Cost in 2023?<a id="budgets"> </a>  

Let’s jump right into it—what will the average wedding cost in 2023?

And the answer is: __it depends.__

According to the survey, __the average wedding budget sits between $20,000 - $40,000 (the same as 2022).__ But, as a whole, the amount that couples were willing to pay for their weddings were all over the map—with budgets ranging from $5,000 all the way to $100,000-plus.

For example, __16 percent of couples budgeted less than $10,000__ for their wedding, which could, for example, cover costs for a backyard ceremony or a small celebration at a local recreation center. But, __13 percent of couples budgeted between $50,000 and $100,000__ for their wedding, which would, in most places, take care of an event at an upscale wedding venue for a sizable guest list. And __3.4 percent of respondents budgeted over $100,000__ for their wedding, which, depending on the wedding size, could pay for a destination wedding in some of the world’s most exclusive locales.

The bottom line is that there is no “average” cost for a wedding; your wedding costs will depend on what kind of wedding you want to have (and how well you stick to your budget). In 2023, you can plan an unforgettable wedding, no matter what kind of budget you’re working with.

## How Are Couples Paying for Their Weddings in 2023?<a id="split"> </a>  

Now that you understand how much couples are budgeting for their weddings in 2023, let’s jump into how they plan to cover those costs.

The most common way that couples are paying for their weddings in 2023 is by sharing the costs with their parents and/or in-laws. __However, the majority of couples continue to contribute to the payment of their wedding in some way.__ Nearly a quarter of them plan to pay for their wedding in full. 

Some couples are also becoming strategic to cover wedding costs; 29 percent of respondents said they were optimizing credit cards to pay for their wedding (for example, by using a card that offers cash back or points that they can utilize for their honeymoon). 24% are adding cash funds to supplement wedding costs to their registries. 

## Couples are Willing to Splurge for a Memorable Wedding<a id="splurge"> </a>  

Sticking to a wedding budget is important; however, __in 2023, many couples are willing to splurge a bit,__ particularly if those splurges will capature all their gorgeous wedding memories.

When asked as to which category they’d be willing to spend more on, 53 percent of respondents cited the wedding photographer as their ultimate splurge. Thirty-five percent said that they’d be willing to splurge on an [open bar](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/open-bar-weddings-a-guide), while 39 percent and 26 percent would spend more on their wedding venue and attire, respectively.

## They're Also are More Cost-Conscious 

Weddings are a significant expense for couples, but, in 2023, couples are also thinking about all the ways they can save—and are budgeting accordingly. __81 percent have added cash funds to their registry, and they’re using them as an opportunity to ask for support on the many other financial responsibilities beyond their wedding__ like:

- Honeymoon / travel: 84.38%
- To purchase a home or move to a new home: 33.17%
- To help pay for our wedding: 23.83%
- Home renovations / upgrades: 18.49%

There's also an increased interest in upcycling with this generation, 19% opting to thrift their wedding looks and/or elements.

## Plan Your Dream Wedding in 2023

When you’re planning your wedding, it’s only natural to wonder what other couples are paying for their weddings. If the wide range of wedding budgets in 2023 has anything to teach us, it’s this: There is no “perfect” price for a wedding. Instead, set a budget that you’re comfortable with—and then use that budget to plan the perfect wedding for *you*.

Formulating a wedding budget is couples’ least favorite wedding moment, according to [Zola’s 2023 First Look Report](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/the-first-look-report-2023). Although it may not be the most fun part of coordinating a wedding, it’s an essential first step that can save you stress (and strife with your partner) down the line. 

But where do you start when making a wedding budget? To help, Zola created a detailed list of all the top things that make up a wedding budget, complete with some tips about how to budget for unexpected expenses.

## A Budget for Weddings of Any Size<a id="plan"> </a>

Remember: Just as there’s no one-size-fits-all wedding, there’s no one-size-fits-all budget. But a budget is useful for planning a wedding of any size and can help you focus on your priorities and track and compare your spending.

__Most couples budget $20,000 to $40,000 for their wedding, and the vast majority invite 100 to 200 guests.__ Some 28% of couples optimize credit cards and perks to pay for their wedding. And the top elements that couples are willing to splurge on are the photographer, the venue, an open bar, catering, and attire.

This is likely the biggest portion of your budget, making up some of the most key elements of your wedding. If you can [hire a vendor](https://www.zola.com/wedding-vendors) to provide more than one service for your big day, it’s most cost-efficient to use fewer vendors—you'll always get a better rate if you're getting more from one vendor, plus you won't be paying multiple setup or delivery fees.

__i. [Venue](https://www.zola.com/wedding-vendors/wedding-venues):__ Start with the venue, because it's the biggest piece of the wedding budget and a major factor in determining guest count. These costs can include: room rental fee, venue deposit, ceremony fee (if the ceremony is being held at the reception venue), parking fees, coat check fees, liability insurance, tax and service fees, and security (some venues require it). This category was the second top category that Zola’s First Look Report 2023 respondents were willing to splurge on.

[Food](https://www.zola.com/wedding-vendors/wedding-catering):__ This includes tasting appointment (if not complimentary with your catering package), rehearsal dinner, passed hors d'oeuvres, plated/buffet/family-style meal or food stations, service staff, catering equipment (such as plates, silverware, glassware, serving platters, etc.), vendor meals, tax and gratuity (sometimes called the "service charge"), and setup and/or cleanup fees.

__iii. [Dessert](https://www.zola.com/wedding-vendors/wedding-cakes-desserts):__ It's true that some venues include wedding cake or other sweet treats within their packages, but it's common for couples to outsource the dessert portion of their wedding. This category may include cocktail hour drinks, reception drinks, Champagne toast, open bar/hosted beer and wine/specialty cocktails, bartender service, mixers, coffee/tea, non-alcoholic beverages, glassware (if not included in your catering package), bar signage, corkage fees (if you opt to BYO), liquor license (if not provided by venue or caterer), and bartender gratuity. Some venues include alcohol in their packages.

[Photography](https://www.zola.com/wedding-vendors/wedding-photographers) and [Videography](https://www.zola.com/wedding-vendors/wedding-videographers):__ This was the category that Zola’s First Look Report 2023 respondents were most willing to splurge on. And for good reason: Photography is one of the best investments for your wedding. Great photos will last a lifetime and become prized keepsakes from the big day, making this a splurge-worthy purchase. And nothing will bring back your favorite wedding memories quite like a short film. Costs may include an engagement session, rehearsal-dinner coverage, wedding-day coverage, albums or prints, same-day edit, raw footage, highlight reel, and feature film.

__vi. [Flowers](https://www.zola.com/wedding-vendors/wedding-florists):__ Flowers can completely transform the look of your wedding. Plus, many couples opt to carry bouquets or wear boutonnieres. A flower budget generally includes bouquets, boutonnières, corsages, flowers and accessories for the flower girl/ring bearer, wedding cake flowers (if additional cake décor is needed), reception centerpieces (for guest tables, guestbook table, food stations, etc.), and delivery fees.

[Pinterest launched in 2010](https://www.businessinsider.com/a-non-geeks-guide-to-pinterest-the-biggest-internet-hit-since-facebook-2012-2), and since then, users have adopted the platform for digital scrapbooking and grouping visual elements together in various labeled boards. This platform may not be your best friend for finding specific vendor resources, but it can provide ideas to visually replicate or modify to fit your wedding.

If you’re unsure of where to start when it comes to Pinterest, simply search general tags like wedding inspiration. From there, you will find pins of different aesthetics that resonate with you or Pinterest influencers with similar senses of style whose other boards you may want to browse. Through these explorations, you should start to notice more specific colors and trends that you gravitate toward, which will help you narrow your search terms. Create a board for all of your wedding inspiration, or split it up into multiple boards for each specific aspect of your wedding like your reception, bridal gown, bridesmaids' dresses, decor, flowers, and food. 

### Instagram

[Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/zola/) functions as another highly visual platform for garnering inspiration from photos and videos. If you have specific engaged or married couples in your own life or who you look up to as influencers, start by following that list of people—especially if they post frequently. ## How to Make a Social Media Plan for Your Wedding

Once you’ve executed your dream wedding vision, now comes the work of sharing moments from your wedding day with your family, friends, and online community. For example, influencers or couples with a substantial social media following and interest in social media will likely post more wedding content than those who have less of an online presence. 

Many couples choose to at least show small snippets of their wedding online, like an engagement announcement post and photos of the wedding day. According to Zola’s 2023 First Look Report, 67.97% of couples shared an engagement post and 63.37% shared photos after the big day.

### 1. Find Out What You Want to Share—and Where

Wedding content comes in many forms and variations, from ceremony videos to engagement posts, getting ready TikToks, bridal shower photos, and much more. All these forms of digital content can be executed by professionals or taken more informally on a cellphone with a decent camera. Many couples want photos of their guests enjoying the wedding, staged/professional photos of the bridal party and themselves, candid shots of the day, and a professional wedding video or photo compilation.

When considering what content you want to share, you and your partner should account for aspects like your budget for photography and video, the quality of content you’re looking for, and protecting your privacy. For example, if you have a large budget for photography and video, you and your partner may want to get more content than the average couple. This could mean photos on your actual wedding day and the events leading up to your wedding, like the rehearsal dinner, bridal shower, and bachelor and bachelorette parties.   

After you and your spouse receive the wedding content from your photographer/videographer, you can devise a social media plan for sharing your favorite photos and videos. According to this year's survey, __[the average wedding budget ](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/what-weddings-really-cost)sits between $20,000 - $40,000 (the same as 2022).__ But, as a whole, the amount that couples were willing to pay for their weddings were all over the map—with budgets ranging from $5,000 all the way to $100,000-plus.The most common way that couples are paying for their weddings in 2023 is by sharing the costs with their parents and/or in-laws. However, the vast majority of couples (71%) continue to contribute to the payment of their wedding in some way. Nearly a quarter of them plan to pay for their wedding in full. 

Weddings are a significant expense for couples, but, in 2023, couples are also thinking about all the ways they can save—and are budgeting accordingly. __81 percent have added cash funds to their registry, and they’re using them as an opportunity to ask for support on the many other financial responsibilities beyond their wedding__ like:

- Honeymoon / travel: 84.38%
- To purchase a home or move to a new home: 33.17%
- To help pay for our wedding: 23.83%

This coming year, things are looking a bit familiar to popular wedding months of the past. While some of the most popular times to get engaged and married remain mainstays, we’re seeing new months on couples’ radars, as well as an overall shift in 2023’s projected wedding season. It’s official: Everyone’s getting engaged and married in these months. Read on for all of the ‘whens’ and ‘whys.’

## Top Months to Get Married<a id="married"> </a>  
With 2023 comming off the heels of one of the busiest wedding seasons ever, it's no surprise to see the most popular wedding months pre-pandemic rising back to the top. 

After last year's shift due to postponed weddings, September rises back to the #1 most popular wedding month for 2023. Summertime and early fall typically host the most weddings, next year’s couples have set the most dates between May and September.

### September
During the summer months, many people’s calendars are marked up with wedding dates and summer vacations. [September](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/september-wedding-heres-everything-you-need-to-know), however, sees a decrease in packed plans, making it ideal for couples with longer guest lists. In early autumn, guests have more time and availability, so they’re more likely to be able to make it to your celebration. September also embodies that desired fall feeling that many engaged couples are after, while still offering some of the warm weather that was present at the end of summer. Add in the three-day Labor Day weekend and many are sold.

### June
[June weddings](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/june-wedding-everything-you-need-to-know) are well-liked for many of the reasons that we’ve already covered. However, the month is also steeped in history and tradition. For one, June is named after Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage and childbirth, and thus long considered a favorable month to get married. Moreover, its popularity dates back to the Celtic calendar. At the time, young couples would pair up around May Day (May first) with the intention of marrying in August. However, impatient couples would set their date for June, shortening the waiting period and ensuring the month’s early popularity. 

Nowadays, June weddings are often sought after for more practical reasons. The beginning of summer has great weather, summer break allows for large gatherings and travel, and you can be flexible with your wedding venue (indoor vs. outdoor) and attire.

### May
May weddings enjoy a lot of the benefits that June weddings do, such as nice weather and the flexibility that comes with that. However, as an added bonus, these weddings take place at the very start of summer. This means that they’re less likely to clash with other people’s plans, such as summer vacations and other weddings. On that note, guests won’t be suffering from wedding fatigue, which is possible during the busy summer wedding season. 

Having a wedding in May also allows couples to enjoy the rest of their summer, rather than spend it worrying about last-minute details. Added bonus: For a lot of venues and vendors, May falls just outside of peak summer pricing. For couples that prioritize sticking to a budget, this month provides all of the perks of a summer wedding without the extra cost.

### October
The reasons why October sees so many weddings are similar to why it sees so many engagements. In many places it’s the perfect post-summer temperature (not too hot or cold for you and your guests), and vibrant fall colors have started to paint mountains, trees, and landscapes. Because of this shift in the seasons, there’s also an opportunity to use decor that’s deeper, moodier, or cozier than is usually seen in the spring or summer. 

Autumn also opens the door up to fun and seasonal food and cocktail options. And we can’t forget [Halloween](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-to-put-together-a-spooky-halloween-wedding), which gives couples who enjoy dressing up the chance to throw the ultimate themed ceremony and reception.

### April
Although April can have unpredictable weather, this seems to be the only downside to having a wedding this month. That aside, April doesn’t have many calendar conflicts in 2022, with Easter on the 17th and Passover from the 15th through the 23rd. When it isn’t raining, couples and their guests can enjoy comfortable weather, with temperatures anywhere from the fifties to the eighties throughout the US. 

April also has popular and traditional context that makes it a favorable month to get married during. It’s possible that weddings this month shot up in popularity some years ago due to the Royal Wedding between William and Kate, which took place on April 29th. However, looking much further back, it can be noted that the Romans considered April the Sacred Month of Venus, the Goddess of love and fertility.

### July
One of the first things that comes to mind with a mid-summer wedding is the high likelihood of fantastic weather. In many parts of the US there is a very low risk of showers or strong winds, which comes as a great relief for those who want an outdoor or outdoor-indoor wedding. This also lets you be selective when it comes to venue styles and what you and your guests wear. The days are longer, an abundance of flowers and fresh fruits are in season, and people are more willing to spend time traveling and socializing. 

Speaking of travel, guests are more likely to do so because of relaxed work schedules and breaks from school. July weddings are also far from any winter holidays, meaning that guests have more freedom in their schedules and might have some more room in their budgets for travel.

With that in mind, let’s start by looking at the months when people are getting engaged. This data hasn’t seen as big of a change, likely due to proposals being a more intimate experience. That is to say, not many couples plan on having all of their loved ones present for it. 

More often, proposals involve the couple, if not a handful of close friends and family members. This has made getting engaged throughout the last year easier to manage, with the usual factors such as weather, time off from work and school, and holidays having the largest influence.

### December
The holiday season has long reigned supreme when it comes to the most popular months to get engaged—and we can’t say that we’re surprised. December brings with it feelings of thankfulness and love. It’s the time that we’re most likely to be surrounded by loved ones, many of whom couples want to share these special moments with. 

The pressures of everyday life also seem to cease some, with schools letting out for winter break and workplaces often giving a few days off for major holidays. With loved ones near, holiday cheer, and many towns decked out in festive decor, it comes as no surprise that December is such a beloved time to get engaged.

May lands in that nice place between late spring and early summer, with sunnier weather making an appearance in many places. Warmer days and the long Memorial Day weekend begin to coax people outside, making outdoor proposals much easier to pull off.
